What does the word AKAW mean?
The word „akaw“ is old school surf slang. It is shouted out in the water when spotting the perfect wave or something surprising happens. In many ways, one might approach the future like riding waves. You need to observe and embrace the right opportunity to be in for the chance of the perfect ride. This requires training and skills — in surfing as much as in life.

What is the story behind AKAW?
AKAW has been developed by physicist and cultural entrepreneur Christian Rauch to help groups have more meaningful conversations about the future. The cards and method have been used and tested since 2017 in different settings around the world – from an Indian temple to a United Nations conference, a French business school and the headquarter of a global corporation. During the course of the 2020 pandemic lockdown, artists Monja Gentschow and Jana Marei collaborated on the illustrations and the AKAW cards were released for the first time as a limited edition. As an effort to spread hope about the possibilities of a more sustainable future, 2021 marks the start of the AKAW collective journey.
Can AKAW tell us the future?
Thinking about the future is no easy task. Yet we all should practice it more often. Not to predict what comes next, but to embrace the wealth of possibilities at hand and to acknowledge this for our presence. New realities form as thoughts manifest into ideas, stories and actions.
