What is AKAW?

AKAW is an exploratory card game for dreamers and curious minds. Think of it as a real-world tarot deck for exercising your futures thinking abilities. Collectively map the uncharted waters of a more purposeful tomorrow. Let your imagination roam free to merge trends and technologies that are transforming our world. Look at them from different perspectives and match cards to embark together on bold and open-ended explorations into the possibilities of the future.

No need to be an expert: for playing AKAW, curiosity and imagination is the most important ingredient.

The cards

The AKAW deck consists of 25 cards in 4 categories. Each card contains a beautiful hand-drawn illustration and descriptive text.

8 Trend cards: Describe major global forces that shape our future like population growth, urbanization or climate change.
8 Technology cards: Contain technological innovations which are transforming our world like artificial intelligence, blockchain or genome editing.
5 Perspective cards: The 5 dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.
4 Ideation cards: Lenses you look through to guide your thinking into different directions: positive and negative, likely and unlikely.

How is it played?

Think of AKAW as your real-world tarot deck. The goal of the game is to come up with a future fiction — a little story, particular aspect or situation of a hypothetical world of tomorrow — from a combination of cards. New combinations of cards lead to new scenarios and stories. The challenge is to integrate all the cards into the future fiction and let your imagination flow.

Lay out a spread of 4 cards – with one card from each stack – in front of you.
Come up with a future fiction together: gradually build up a story which „tells“ a possible future until all the cards combine.
Capture your AKAW moment as a "what if"–question and share it with the community via the AKAW website.
